Commitment Trouble

I would send pictures but they don't work with this computer and we had to walk like an hour to find an internet cafe that was open; everything except for the bars are closed here for New Years. I don't think we are really gonna do anything tonight.  Maybe watch fireworks if they have any here? Idk, we've decided that our holidays here are kinda sad and that's just kinda how it is if you're on a mission in Brasil.

Honestly not a lot happened this week except Christmas, it was super great to skype. It doesn't feel like that happened a week ago, feels like it's been an eternity.

I really love the members here, but one think im getting a bit tired of is them all telling me that im not qualified to be Sister Jarretts companion because i only have 3 months in the field and im an American.  Ive kinda learned that you can pretty much say anything here and its not rude so i just kinda gotta let it roll off haha, especially when people (aka investigators) figure out im American and then act like they dont understand me and ask me if im speaking english withh them. Its so funny because they understand me up until they figure out im an american and then suddenly they think im speaking English haha. It happened with Sister Souza, one of my roomates. She walked into a store and asked for something and the dude was like "sorry, i dont speak your language" cause he just assumed we were all Americans. She told him she was brasilian and he was a bit embarassed to say the least. But for the most part its pretty cool to be an american because we can alwasy use it to our advantage, saying we left our homes from super far away to visit with them etc. and people love to learn about the US.

We are working super hard here, but everyone has trouble with committment. We have over 30 baptismal dates, but the majority of them fall because they dont want to go to church, or they think they want to wait until theyre more prepared, which is fine, but we all know that "more prepared" means in like 20 more years haha.

Yesterday we realized we had a zone conference this week, and that they were gonna take our last 4 weeks of numbers/ how much we worked and compare it to 5 weeks worth of work. Makes no sense, but anyways is gonna happen. So we decided to go on splits with the sister training leaders and have a competition. We had 2 hours to do all the numbers for one week, and the winner would get acai from the other sisters. So Sister Ribeiro and i went out running, it was awesome. We did over 100 invites, 16 baptismal dates, 27 new investigators and over 30 lessons in an hour and a half. So our numbers doubled this week, but i dont think ive ever been so tired in my life haha. it was very satisfying.

Not much else happened this week, just a lot of work so we wouldn't think too much about our families

Happy Holidays to everyone!

Feliz Natal

My child's name is Sister Jarrett and she is from New Hampshire! (oh yeah, if you train you are a mom so congrats mom, you are a grandma).  She studied at BYU, philosophy and anthropology. We only speak in Portuguese, so I'm glad she's up for that challenge. We've only had 5 days together but I like her, she's willing to work hard which rocks. We are living with two sister trainers, Sister Souza from Sao Paulo who will go home this transfer, and Sister Ribeiro who has a year on the mission and she's from Porto Alegre. We spend about 70% of our time with them, everything except for working.

One day I tried to speak in English with Sister Jarrett to explain something and I couldn't figure out how to say anything in English, so that was kinda interesting. I honestly don't think I've been teaching or speaking better than in this transfer so I 100% have so much help from the Lord, which ROCKS.

Our new ward ROCKS, the members are so nice, and I've heard super good things about the Bishop so that is a nice change. It's kinda small but about normal, probably 60? people, idk I'm super bad at guestimating. I am the pianist again, I think I've come to the conclusion that I need to hold a piano class in every area hahaha

For investigators, it's super hard because the sisters didn't write down anything really about the old investigators so we are kinda starting new. We had a cool experience this week, we met a man on the street named Roswaldo and we invited him to be baptized in the first minute. The day we were going to visit him I felt super inspired to study the Bible for personal study. And for some reason, I decided to study how it applied to the the lesson of the Restoration. So I marked a bunch of scriptures in my Bible that related. We went and taught him the Restoration of the church that day. He went into his room and brought out his Bible and told us that the Bible is super important to him. He asked for the pamphlet so he could read it and then cross reference it with the Bible. I was so grateful I had studied that morning because I was able to mark scriptures in the pamhplet that supported our message, and we gave him a Book of Mormon. I was sooo happy on Sunday because he came to church, with his pamhplet and everything! It was so cute

I like this area for the most part because there's cool stuff here, but it's a lot richer than Sao Sebastiao so we get rejected a lot more which is a little disheartening but it's part of the life. People here are still obsessed with my hair and how pale I am, and I cannot count how many people ask if sister Jarrett and I are twins....One lady even emailed as I prayed and talked on the phone haha it was kinda funny

I was so nervous to train, especially cause I know that Americans literally know like nothing when they arrive (aka I literally was like a lost sheep for my first transfer) and I still feel like I don't have enough time on the mission to train. But now I'm super grateful for this opportunity.  I think that I'm learning way way more right now, which is awesome, and I'm grateful I'm able to help Sister Jarrett.

Just wanted to send a thank you to everyone for all the sweet Christmas messages! Definitely made me smile!

FELIZ NATAL, our house be decked out with fake snow (thanks Kim!) and christmas trees!

TAGUATINGA 2

Wow so much happened this week, it feels like it's been a month since I've emailed. The Christmas Conference was super fun, our President dressed up as Santa Claus so that made me laugh. And when I was there I got 4 boxes so that was kinda interesting to try to carry back to Sao Sebastiao with me through the bus and the metro...but all worked out. And I didn't really have any patience, so I opened 2/4 :)) I was soooo pumped to have a speaker I think my comp and I have been listening to christmas music nonstop for the past week now because of it

So yesterday my companion and I were both freaking out about the transfer because per usual there were like a million rumors floating around. This transfer 24 new missionaries are arriving. Finally, for the first time since I arrived, a new American sister will arrive, so I am now the second newest American. Low and behold, I am actually going to train her, while opening an area, which means no one where I am living has been in that area yet so we don't know anything. I am being transferred to Taguatinga 2 which is where Sister Barrios was before Sao Sebastiao! I was so nervous after the call and I think I slept about 3 hours last night because I was so worried because I feel so unready to train, let alone an American, in a new area. But I know that who the Lord calls the Lord qualifies, so this should be a really good learning experience for me. Sister Barrios is leaving to go to Nucleo Bandeirante as well, and the area I am currently in is closing for sisters, which means two elders are going to come. I was kinda worried about that, but turns out it's Elder Hendrickson from my CTM district! So I know it's in good hands, and I'm excited to hear about all the baptism they'll have.

So this week we worked so hard on Maria Clara, who bore her testimony about knowing the church was true a couple weeks back. She kept telling us she wanted to be baptized but the parents wouldnt let her. So we talked to the mom and dad and they agreed to let her be baptized on saturday, but we still didnt know if  they would sign the baptismal document. So saturday came, and we were getting all ready for the baptism, made cookies, signs, everything. Then Telma, her friend, called and told us Maria Clara wanted to talk to us. SHe told us her mom told her she shouldn’t feel ready to do this, so we were super sad. I haven't seen sister Barrios cry that much in 6 weeks. It was kinda hard on us, and sister barrios kept asking me why this would happen when we gave it our all, and there are other missionaries baptizing who can’t even follow the rules.   We came to the conclusion that we did our part, and sometimes that's the most we can do, because we can't take away the agency of others, nor the will of the Lord. But I know she will be baptized one day, just not this transfer.

We also had a fun fight with a moth that we thought was a bat because it was LITERALLY that big, kid you not.

Oh and this week our water stopped. so that was fun, but now it works

Have a great week!
Sister Cecil

PS. no i did not dye my hair, and yes my eyes are actually that blue, and one day my comp and i made empanadas so that was litty

“Good Examples”

Oi!
I wasn't feeling super great this week so there isn't a whole lot of stuff that happened this week.
However, because the transfer happens on the 19th (i think), my comp and I decided to open the first Christmas package together and it's the cutest Advent Calendar! We are counting down the days until the Christmas Conference together and it's so funny to watch her try American candy!

I also tried the jeans of my comp yesterday and I was very happy because it has been 5 months since I have worn jeans so I made her take photos but I was moving around too much because I was excited. photos attached (you don’t have to include this part in the group email but you can if you want haha)

Last P'day we went to the house of a family who was baptized this year. They are probably my favorite people everrr, the mom isn't a member and doesn't really go to church but she has 3 kids; 11, 12, and 16 who are super firm. They always come to our baptisms, and every monday night have Family Home Evening, just the three of them. They always invite us and it's just the CUTEST thing, always strengthens my testimony. They are such good examples. (photo attached)

Today we spent P'day in the Mission President's house because we had to practice for the Christmas Conference and he doesn't let elders and sisters together at all so he said we could go to his house on P'day... We weren't super excited about it, but it was actually kinda fun to hang out with him and we got free lunch so boom, win, and he's actually pretty funny.

We are going to try for a baptism this saturday with Joao Pedro, he's been to the church for about 5 months now and knows he needs to be baptized, but is too scared to make that step because he thinks he needs to be perfect after. We had a fun time explaining just how imperfect we are to him.

On Sunday the cutest thing happened, one girl (Maria Clara) wants to be baptized soo bad so her mom lets her go to church but says she cant be baptized. Anyways, she went up to the podium because it was Fast Sunday and bore her testimony about how she knows this church is true. SHE IS 10 YEARS OLD! it was adorable, but makes us super sad because her mom wont let her be baptized. But miracles happen so who knows!

2/4

2/4 aint bad? (yes i know that equals 1/2)
Our goal was 4 baptisms this week but some issues happened with Ester and Maria Clara. We talked to the mom of Ester and she was soooo not on board at first; But let me say thank goodness we are foreigners because she got super excited to talk to us. We were there for like an hour and a half, and by the end she was on board. Ester still didn't feel ready by the time the interview came around but that's okay because she feels she needs to get to know more about the church! And that's our purpose! With Maria Clara it was the exact opposite, she wants to be baptized and passed the interview but her mom is a little iffy about it and didn't give authorization.

We did, however, baptize Erica and Adilson!
Erika readily accepted our new goal of this Saturday with no problem, and our LD said it was the fastest interview he's had because of how ready she was. Then with Adilson, he's just so ready to be baptized, there was no problems there. Ahh  it was the cutest thing, the Sunday after the baptism we invited him to have lunch with us and a group of the members and they added him to their group chat and everything so that was cute. The baptism went smoothly for the most part, we have a new font (aka pool) so yayyyy

But of course, there always has to be a trial every transfer. Since this transfer it isn't my companion, nor is it spiritual, it's physical. My poor companion could barely walk on Tuesday because of her knee problems so she went to the hospital with Sister Cooper on Wednesday and I went on splits with the Sister Trainers so we could have our interviews. She was told she's not allowed to leave the house for 5 DAYS. You could say she was a little devastated...so we went on splits with Lago Sul which would have been cool except all of our appointments fell through so I felt bad because they came to Sao Sebastiao twice in one day for nothing haha. We also went on splits again with the Sister Training Leaders so it was nice that I was able to go out and work.

Sister Barrios is still the best, no companionship is perfect, but we are having a lot of fun together. She's teaching me spanish (uhm more or less) and I'm teaching her English! We are hoping to both be transferred to Palmas together next transfer.

140

I love working with Sister Barrios, she is such a good missionary. We almost work too hard, cause now we both are having pain in our knees for how much we walked this week.

Friday was rough because we woke up at 6 am to go to the office so that we could get my Visto sorted out with the elders who work there, only to arrive and 9 and find out it was a holiday and so everything was closed. We returned to Sao Sebastiao and honestly, we literally walked until the end of the earth that day. Of course, the majority of our appointments fell through, and both of us were feeling down and really not wanting to walk to our next appointment which was 1 hour away. Her phone number was disconnected because it was the wrong number, which usually means the address is wrong; but we decided we were going to go anyways. I can honestly say God blesses missionaries who strive to work as hard as possible. We went to the investigator's house and after teaching the lesson she told us she used to be super committed to how she was baptized in her church, but now she's thinking she needs to be baptized again. She offered the closing prayer, and was crying as she finished. We marked a baptismal date for her, but she works on sundays so we shall see what happens. As we left the house we felt a little better about our decision. Then as we were walking, a boy asked us who we were. As we talked to him, his uncle came and told us he went and visited the church in Lago Sul and really like it, but didn't know where it was in Sao Sebastiao. We definitely were on that street for a reason, and we are going to be able to visit him this week. The blessings didn't stop there, we went to our last appointment at 8:30: Erica. She is the sister of Nicolly, daughter of Lucimar who were baptized last transfer. The week before we had invited her to pray about whether or not she should be baptized. Honestly, her transformation has been amazing, she used to always leave the room as we taught, and now she's inviting us to come over and teach. Anyways, as we entered the house I could tell she was excited. She was just waiting for us to ask her if she had received an answer. I asked her "voce teve o opportunidade..." and I barely even finished asking and she was already nodding her head. She is so excited to be baptized. We marked a date with her for the 1st of December, but since she went to church this week we are gonna try to move it to this Saturday. As we left her house that night I had never felt so tired in my life, but both of us just ran down the street, dancing, shouting, etc. from happiness.

That being said, we are going to try to have 4 baptisms this Saturday...it's gonna be stressful and we are bringing the sisters from Lago Sul to help us one day this week so we can get to all of our appointments. The first baptism will hopefully be Erica. Then we have Adilson who just randomly went to church one day because a friend mentioned it to him, and he's been attending so we have to follow up with him and give him more lessons this week. Then there is Ester and Maria Clara, friends who are 11 and 10 years old. They rock! They love me because I am an American and want to be baptized this Saturday butttttt their parents are hardcore Catholic. We are going to talk to them tomorrow and explain what's happening. Definitely will be a difficult week to hit the goals of the mission, but we are hoping that with our obedience and fasting the Lord will provide a way, as he did the week before.

We found out last Pday that the number of invites for church has been moved from 70 per week, to 140 per week. We thought 70 was a lot, and now its double. On Saturday we realized we had only done about 1/3 of that so we realized we really needed to bring it, and in one day we did 73 invites, our normal weekly goal in 1 day. We managed to hit all of our goals this week which was really satisfying.

Oh and quite possibly the best thing EVER happened to me this week. There's this one member who is rather well off, and likes to take us out to a restaurant in Lago Sul every month. He always asks us what food we want and my companion, wanting sushi, told him that I was craving sushi. So we arrive, and the waitress asks what kind of meal we want. He says "Fica a vontade". That was music to my ears. All you can eat sushi???Yes please. I had 4 giant platters full of sushi,  I kid you not (photos included). And yes, I was thinking "sushi?? in the very center of Brasil?? many many light years away from any sea?? how am i NOT going to throw up because of this." but then i thought "this will probably be the only opportunity I have in 1.5 years to eat good sushi. That's totally fine, I don't even care". The Lord blessed me yet again and I did NOT get sick and I was very very very very very happy. I also made guacamole again this week from another big boi avacado so I have been eating rather well here.

Thank you everyone for your lovely emails and prayers!
Sister Cecil

4 Months

I hit 4 months this week, and everyone says the mission goes by fast but I have yet to experience that haha. I did, however, eat cold pizza for breakfast one morning and I felt like an American. It's hard not to feel like an American here, everyone stares at me because I'm so blonde and pale. It's a blessing because people love to talk to me and always want me to come visit their homes because of where I'm from. I also really loved the cereal you sent mom, I'm too poor to buy any here haha.

I'm loving being with my new companion, Sister Barrios.  Presidente Cooper emailed me this week saying that she is a great companion, which isn't something he would normally say. She really is awesome. She is so dedicated and ready to work and we absolutely killed our goals this week, so that was super satisfying. I'm her first American companion so she wants to learn English. I'm also her first companion not in training so I think that's why she is so pumped to work in this area.
We have 10 dates for November 24th to be baptized so lets see how that works! Our goal is 9 dates for baptism every week which is a lot, and kinda hard because they usually fall through, which is sad.
We had our District Meeting yesterday with Sister Trainers in Nucleo and got to spend the night.  So Sister Olsen, Sister Shields and I had a sleepover!!!

Confirmation & Baptism

Oi!

Well, we had a baptism this week! Jk, really, the sisters in Lago Sul (shout out to sister Olsen and Sister Shields) had a baptism, but she lives in Sao Sebastiao so technically she's a new member of our ward haha. It's really great that she was able to be baptized there because she will be better integrated into that ward, and her testimony is more important than whose investigator she is. It was super fun to go to the baptism though!

I'm so sad to be done with training, I keep telling my new companion that she still is gonna have to act like I am in training. Sister Ramos and I got the phone call last night that she would train (FOR THE 4th TIME, and FOR HER LAST 2 TRANSFERS) IN PALMAS, so she leaves tomorrow for a 14 hour bus ride to open an area with a newbie. It will be hard, but I know she's the best person for the job. I am staying in Sao Sebastiao and my new companion is Sister Barrios, she is from Buenos Aires, Argentina! She seems super great. Earlier this week I was really wanting to leave this area, but as the week progressed and I became more involved with our investigators I started getting really stressed about leaving because they all have a lot of potential and there is so much here to do. I was super worried I would leave so I'm pretty okay with staying now as I focus on the investigators and members. And I'm happy Sister Olsen is staying too haha, hopefully we will have a district meeting this transfer??

We had a lot of trials this week, but also a lot of blessings. We did a family night with all the members every night, which was good because Sister Ramos got to say goodbye to them. We struggled with some things as a companionship, and with all our investigators (the first two days all of our appointments fell through) so we decided to fast together. It really helped, honestly. I was so stressed about being senior this week, but it wasn't that bad, just disappointing because I felt way worse when our appointments fell through. But after the fast we had way more success, and became even closer. I am so sad Sister Ramos is in the area that's farthest away from me.

I learned a lot of things this transfer, especially how important it is to listen to the Spirit and stand up for what is right. You're never going to be able to follow the rules or the commandments perfectly, but as long as you try there will be a way. This week Sister Ramos taught me a lot about loving our investigators, and everyone we teach. If you are too preoccupied with what you are going to say, and how the lesson will be, you wont be able to get to know them and listen to what they say, and then you wont be able to help them. If you listen with charity, the pure love of Christ, you will already know what to say because you will be guided.

We are hoping to baptize Claudia, Pedro, and Joao Pedro this transfer because they will get married hopefully -  So I am excited for that! I hear that Sister Barrios likes to work hard, so vamos!

Sister Cecil

No More Peanut Butter *Broken Heart Emoji*

I would like to announce that i no longer have peanut butter because i have consumed it all so that has been rather devastating. rip

There was a re election because the first election was too close and everyone had to go vote on Sunday so that meant we had very few people show up to church which was kind of disappointing. On the upside i ate chicken heart this week and it was quite good actually, not what i would have expected. Not like Tucanos at all.

For the first time ever we had an investigator tell us she didn't want us to come back to her house again. This has never happened to me, but she was really nice, just really dedicated to her religion. Usually the people here are too nice to straight up say they dont want us to come back haha, at first it was nice cause we never get rejected but it ends up being pretty difficult to have firm investigators because no one keeps their commitments. They just agree to because they dont want to be rude!

The package that i got actually was from you mom haha but dont worry!! I am not opening it until Christmas, or close to Christmas. Maybe a little before (or a lot before). I cant believe it only took 2 weeks to get here... you are now the package sending expert.

So im kinda sad because this week will be Halloween and I loveeee Halloween but cant really celebrate it. They kinda celebrate it here, but not as much as Americans.

So this week I went to the foot doctor and turns out 80% of my toes have ingrown toenails so that was really fun to get treated. But the pain was worth it because i now have to wear chacos. Oh poor me, but i am happy that i got authorization and you didnt send them for nothing. Sister Cooper (our mission presidents wife) has a tab there because so many missionaries have foot problems haha.

Last week of training woohoo! Except this is like the worst week because i have to do everything, Sister Ramos is supposed to act like a newbie who barely speaks Portugues and she says i am going to absolutely hate her this week so thats gonna just be loads of fun. I still have so much to learn from her. I was talking to Sister Olsen about how we never feel like we are good enough missionaries, and she said that never really changes until you are about to go home because we always have to be improving. So its not super fun to always feel inadequate but its good because we are always improving!

Transfers next week!

BATISMO, BUGS, AND I Wish I Had Another Thing That Started With A "B", But I Don't, I'm Sorry

Hello I would first of all just like to declare that I have the BEST mom ever. I LOVED my package and was so excited to eat peanut butter for the first time in months. I didn't even like peanut butter before the mission, but now it seems like nectar from the gods. Is that sacrilegious to say?

I also have received another package, not sure from who -  but I will pick it up today!

This week was a fun one...Had a good zone conference (always good because they have food) and after that I headed for Nucleo Banderainte with a sister trainer for trocas (exchanges) for the next day and it was nice to experience a new area.

The most EXCITING thing EVER happened to me. Okay it really is not that exciting but I was pretty happy: So throughout school I've learned about the famous capybara, or the largest rodent in the world. We were being driven to Lago Sul because a member was taking us to a restaurant there and I SAW ONE. I COULD HAVE RIDDEN IT.... IT WAS SO BIG. The capybara was j chillin, eatin sum grass and we just drove past it and I like had an aneurysm cause I could not believe it was real. I'm really not sure why I got so excited about that haha I just never really thought I'd see one in my life.

BATISMOOOOOo

Wohoo!! Maria was baptised this Saturday! We were so excited when she passed the interview, and when we asked if her parents were going to come she said no, but that she was going to be baptised no matter what, and that her mom would give permission.  We went around calling all the members we could to make sure that she would have a lot of people there supporting her. Our Zone Leaders told us they were coming too just to make sure. Our LMA has cancelled every meeting we've planned for the past couple of weeks so we called him and told him he had to plan the baptism. Then that Saturday we were out about 30 minutes from our house proselyting on what seemed to be a nice sunshiny day. Boy were we wrong. It began to absolutely pour. So we run back to our house, sometimes wading through water at our ankles because oh boy is the draining system in the streets bad here, and by the time we arrive we are just soaked, but worst of all, we are worried no one will come to the baptism. Sure enough, our LMA calls and says he's not gonna come cause of the rain. We go to the church, just absolutely soaked and plan the baptism with our elders. 5 minutes before, he ends up actually showing up haha so that was good. Our prayers were answered and a lot of people actually came, and almost everyone brought food!

Well, you all know what the rain brings. We have been battling creatures galore in our house due to all this rain. First it started off with a couple hybrid cockroach, grasshopper, spider things (thank goodness sister Ramos is willing to kill them). I have become accustomed to cockroaches now (as accustomed as one can get) but these roaches are new. Then today we had a nice pile of maggots outside our door, and then there was some frogs hopping around and of course lizards. I thought I loved the rain? Not sure anymore, but I do enjoy this cool weather (hah, 70 degrees is cool for me now).

Love you all!

“Bomb Churrasco”

Oi, Bom Dia!

This week was normal more or less, yesterday was pretty dope though. So we have this family that we have been teaching for a while.  They've been going to church for like 3 months now but are trying to get married so they can get baptized. They're basically members, so they signed up to have us for lunch on Sunday. We went to church on Sunday and we were super disappointed because first of all, we went to 5 of our investigators houses who promised they'd come with us to church and ALL of them either said they were too busy, wanted to go to the other church, or were sleeping! We went to church and that family who always comes wasn't even there. So afterwards we went to their house for lunch. Turns out they didn't go to church because they were cooking and preparing lunch for us. Hands down best lunch ever, churrasco (so much churrasco), salads galore, beans and rice(of course), potatoes, etc and homemade ice cream. It's kinda funny that they didn't come to church because they were making lunch.  Sister Ramos and I had a good laugh about that.

Okay so typical day: I wake up at 7:30, stretch, do exercise for about an hour and then take a shower. I really want to run but Sister Ramos doesn't want to.  Then we revise our day, and then personal study for an hour. Then companionship study for an hour, and then we usually head out for lunch at a members house at 12, usually ends up being 1.5-2 hours because they loovvee to talk and to eat slow. We then go out proselyting until about 9, 9:30. During proselyting we usually go to the people’s houses who we made appointments with but about 50% fall through cause they don't actually plan or remember that we made an appointment. To get new investigators we usually just walk around and talk to people. Almost 99% of who we talk to becomes a new investigator and we mark an appointment.

We are trying really hard to have a baptism this week but we aren't sure if Maria will be ready. We can’t visit her every day because she lives out of town, but we are gonna try our best!

Things are pretty good here for the most part, I'm gonna cry when I get a new companion cause Sister Ramos is honestly the best. She really pushes me to step outside of my comfort zone.  I've been teaching half the lessons since my second day in training lol. Not very well hahaha, but now I'm way more prepared to teach. Sister Ramos made me a happy 3 months sign! She hit 14 months today so we have been joking about how old she is ha ha.  2 more transfers and she goes home, seems so soon for her.

The weather here is so wild. It's either like 5 billion degrees (for me, i think if i get transferred to palmas i will probably die from heat), or it's storming like crazy. Yesterday I saw lightning hit a metal pole on the house across from us.

Oh and that photo is our district. It got changed so our district is only girls!  Today I am gonna go to the lake with Sister Olsen so that should be funnnn
